Charles Darwin And The Tree Of Life [Video]

BBC’s Darwin season featured ‘Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life’ – an animation which illustrates an idea that Darwin and his contemporaries used to explain the evolutionary links between living things. This amazing animation was narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

Given below is the HD video and the transcript of the narration.

Transcript:

So, a hundred and fifty years after the publication of Darwin’s revolutionary book, modern genetics has confirmed its fundamental truth. All life is related. And it enables us to construct with confidence the complex tree that represents the history of life. It began in the sea, some three thousand million years ago. Complex chemical molecules began to clump together to form microscopic blobs: cells.

These were the seeds from which the tree of life developed.

They were able to split, replicating themselves – as bacteria do. And as time passed they diversified into different groups. Some remained attached to one another so that they formed chains. We know them today as algae. Others formed hollow balls which collapsed upon themselves, creating a body with an internal cavity. They were the first multi-celled organisms. Sponges are their direct descendants.

As more variations appeared the tree of life grew and became more diverse. Some organisms became more mobile and developed a mouth that opened into a gut. Others had bodies stiffened by an internal rod. They, understandably, developed sense organs around their front end.

A related group had bodies that were divided into segments with little projections on either side that helped them to move around on the sea floor. Some of these segmented creatures developed hard protective skins which gave their bodies some rigidity. So now, the seas were filled with a great variety of animals.

And then around 450 million years ago some of these armoured creatures crawled up out of the water and ventured on to the land.

And here the tree of life branched in to a multitude of different species that exploited this new environment in all kinds of ways. One group of them developed elongated flaps on their backs, which over many generations eventually developed into wings. The insects had arrived. Life moved into the air and diversified into myriad forms.

Meanwhile, back in the seas, those creatures with a stiffening rod in their bodies had strengthened it by encasing it in bone. They increased in size. They grew fins equipped with muscles that enabled them to swim with speed and power. So fish now dominated the waters of the world.

One group of them developed the ability to gulp air from the water surface. Their fleshy fins became weight-supporting legs and 375 million years ago, a few of these backboned creatures followed the insects on to the land. They were still not independent of water. They were amphibians with wet skins and had to return to water to lay their eggs.

But some of their descendants evolved dry scaly skins and broke their link with water by laying eggs that had watertight shells. These creatures, the reptiles, were the ancestors of today’s tortoises, snakes, lizards and crocodiles. And of course, they included the group that, back then, came to dominate the land: the dinosaurs.

So the tree of life burgeoned into a multitude of different branches.

But 65 million years ago, a great disaster overtook the Earth. Whatever its cause, a great proportion of animal life was exterminated. All the dinosaurs disappeared – except for one branch, whose scales had become modified into feathers. They were the birds.

While they spread through the skies, a small and seemingly insignificant group of survivors began to increase in numbers on the ground beneath. These creatures differed from their competitors in that their bodies were warm and insulated with coats of fur. They were the first mammals. With much of the land left vacant after the great catastrophe they now had their chance. Their warm insulated bodies enabled them to be active at all times – at night as well as during the day – and in all places: from the Arctic to the tropics, in water as well as on land, on grassy plains and up in the trees.

@intelligent great ape, there can be an "intelligent designer" and still be evolution, it's not hard to realize. There was no "creationsim" but there can still be intelligent design in the universe to account for complex actions such as evolution

@Jason "Three thousand million years? …He means three billion years I think"

Not necessarily. Until very recently a billion meant a million million in the UK. I'm not sure what the definition is now but he's either correct or just old fashioned.

By the way, I just wanted to point out one major difference between science and religion. Scientists are fully aware that there is no divine intervention justifying the validity of their work. Just normal everyday humans, imperfect as we are. Imperfect, but verifiable.

Three thousand million years? ...He means three billion years I think. Just thought that was funny.

The animation was great. They could have used terms from the phylogenic system, which is a more recent version of the tree of life.

Im going to call bullshit on this whole thing.

I visited those "science in religion" sites and I have to admit, some very poor presentation skills. Although the presentation of evolution in most cases admits to being imperfect and debatable on many sub-levels, most religious leaders will try to promote the idea that everything progresses and is defined perfectly in a book written by many random men thousands of years ago. The idea of an intelligent designer is not something I completely disregard, but the "followers" who promote one are absolutely false, in terms of the way they do it. The god you worship does not exist, if there is one, so to speak. Interpreting and translating the bible in new ways as to agree with a proven theory is simply childish. If there was an omnipotent god who gave us all an equal chance to worship him, he would not have given us the ability to reproduce and manipulate the words in the bible. They would be universal, and they wouldn't be vague or symbolic (with regards to DNA in one of those sites). Therefore, do not use the bible as a basis for any argument, form your own modern argument based on what you believe and can research. Also, arguing back and forth is quite pointless on the internet, because it will only lead to frustration and a more widespread hatred for anyone with different beliefs. Spirituality has no effect on morality, intelligence, or any other stereotype, so live on in your own way, disregarding trouble and viewing the possibility of something that you have yet to encounter.

    Ahhhh the Religion of Darwin
  • The tree of life and evolution is a marvelous thing... it's too bad religious nutjobs always have to ruin it for everyone else.

Cool. Not as cool as truth, but as sci-fi fantasy, great job. Attenborough must have been on the opium of the masses.

AnswerinGenesis? I am sorry, I dare all freethinking people to find their answers in life through the only two scientific truth... Moby Dick and War & Peace.

So wait molecules just clumped together??? seems like a huge longshot. Molecules randomly clumping together, forming a cell membrane, or a protein sheath, or even a single phospholipid. I dont understand how that could be. I also dont see how it is even possible for the clumped molecules to slowly form an organism. I think that alone is evidence of a higher being. If you have an answer other than that of a higher being, I'd be eager to hear it.

    @Ben Hornback,

Are you implying that religions refrain from dangling pretty, glittering prizes before the masses' eyes to scoop up followers?

If so, I'm pretty sure those pearly gates and eternal bliss would like to have a word with you as far as what constitutes "flashy."
  • Michael
I cannot believe the internet. From these comments it is obvious the internet is swarming with people jacked up on religious dogma.

    Great presentation, Sir David Attenborough.

    @ Ben,
Nothing in this video talks about the spiritual origins of humans. They don't say god doesn't exist, they don't say some spiritual being did not influence our existence all they postulate is how the diversity of life between different regions occurred in terms of physical phenomena with no regard to whether there was some guiding hand or not.

Grow up and stop attacking evolutionary theory for conclusions it does not make.
  • Mark
That was an awesome presentation! Explained the topic most succinctly.

@jay The presentation is intended to describ the relatedness of life, not its origin, they probably didn't want to disrupt the flow of the presentation by detailing the several scientific perspectives on origins; they basically described primordial soup - good enough for a non-specialized audience. If they're actually interested, they'll read into it themselves after watching the show.

@Night we don't come from monkeys. We are related to monkeys through a common ancestor - that we come from monkeys is a common misconception. Our long extinct ancestor was one which had less specialized characteristics of both humans and monkeys. But actually, even that's quite incorrect, because monkeys are way further away from humans than apes (apes indeed differ from monkeys).

Regardless, he didn't bother stating it because it was implicit when he stated that all life is related.
  • Ben Hornback
A perfect example of how the majority of people come to believe anything. Show a pretty picture or a flashy presentation and win those who want to conform.
If you consider yourself a scientist, scholar, or thinker I dare you to check out the otherside of the arguement. Want to prove you aren't biased, see the otherside of the arguement.
    Try answersingenesis.org.
Of course, that side comes with a bunch of strings attached (like morality, worship, etc). Don't be the fool who doesn't want to bow before a creator to begin with and comes in with a mind locked to any opposition. Thanks be to God that Jesus came to give eyes to the spiritually blind and wisdom to the deceived. Apart from Him, I'd be the dumbest of all; afraid of the dark, searching for the flying spaghetti monster, and rationalizing my every move as if I never made a mistake. May God open the eyes and hearts of those who seek His Son.

“intelligent designer” . Since your bible can’t prove human origins through religious theories you have to try presenting your mystical and thoroughly antiquated fantasies concerning said origins as if they have some sort of scientific basis. The world was a better place when they fed your sort to the lions in the colosseum. Religion is like reality TV, it caters to the lowest common denominator.

They tried that once (feeding us to the lions), but for some reason it didn't work (Daniel 6). In common non-mathematical usage, the term "least common denominator" is often misused for the concept of the greatest common divisor. So your statements are ill-conceived. "Since your bible can’t prove human origins through religious theories you have to try presenting your mystical and thoroughly antiquated fantasies concerning said origins as if they have some sort of scientific basis." This statement does not make any sense, the bible is one of the most scientifically and historically accurate books around and has presented scientific facts thousands of years before their discovery. I recommend a few sites for your further study (although I'm sure better ones can be found):

    http://magnifyjehovah.com/index.php/2009/04/15/...

    http://www.everystudent.com/sg/forum/science.html

The more we progress as a race and in our scientific understanding, the more we come to realize how true the bible really is. You have to remember that God commands us not to be mindless lemmings, but to seek out Wisdom and Knowledge. Have you forgotten what science really is? Science is nothing more than the observations we make about the universe we reside in. "Look mom, if I let go of this apple, it falls to the ground." That is the basis of science. Then we investigate the why portion and even then we always don't get it right, we're only human after all. It is also unbeknown to me why so many people have given up on the word adaptation, since it seems to make more sense to me in certain cases than evolution does (which implies changing into an entirely different form and species altogether.) Even science has been in an uproar over the past couple of months. Dr Michio Kaku is starting to leave the Big Bang theory behind in favor for the Multiverse (Parallel Dimensions) theory, since the Big Bang theory is not making as much sense as it used to. Even the aquatic ape theory is causing problems in the scientific community, since it seems current held scientific theories are creating more problems than solutions.

    http://blog.ted.com/2009/07/did_we_evolve_f.php

So it sounds like current science has more in common with presenting mystical (parallel dimensions) and thoroughly antiquated fantasies (human evolution) concerning said origins than the bible does. Even so, how does all of this automatically disprove an intelligent designer? We're trying to understand something that is above us, like a 2D object understanding 3D space and volume. The majority of the scientific community won't accept the case for a God until they are able to put him into a box and say "Here is God in his entirety, let us observe and study him." do you think this will ever happen? Do you think God in his infinite power and wisdom can be contained and understood completely by US? Do not forget your place, you are but a grain of sand in an endless ocean. The universe has somewhere around 200,000,000,000 galaxies. In our galaxy alone there are about 100,000,000,000 stars, and there are over 6,700,000,000 people living and breathing right now. You are tiny. You are a dot. However do not forget, that though we are tiny and small, God comes to each of us, running, arms outstretched. He is willing and has done* everything for you. He loves and is entirely focused on you. Never confuse his actions with the consequences brought upon us by other people's free choices.

I guess the only thing I am asking for is one favor. For a simple prayer. Ask honestly (with an open mind and heart) for God to reveal himself to you.

I did this long ago all by myself (my senior year in high school), my parents and family never took me to church or talked to me about anything of the sort. I just had this feeling in me that I could not explain, like there is something I was missing, something more. I thought ok, even if there is a God, what is he like and which religion is right, if any at all. So I prayed "God, if you exist, show yourself to me and lead me to you." The very next day, I received a phone call from a good friend I had not seen in awhile. He asked me if I wanted to hang out that night, he told me a group of people were going to see a midnight release for a movie and he also invited me to his church that everyone was going to that night before the movie. I've been a Christian ever since.

I am definitely sad that you feel this way and I'll pray for you tonight.
